Is there an oil filter? 6 volt voltage regulator adjustable.

Sorry if this sounds obvious, but is a there an oil filter used on the 66 VW bug? Just bought the car and have never owned a bug before. There appears to be reference to a filter screen...
If not, can one be retrofitted?

Also, the lights, particularly the rear signal lights are very dim. Dimmer than the brake lights. I checked that they are the correct wattage and voltage rating and cleaned the bulb base/contact. Still remains very dim. Is there a way to adjust the voltage regulator to a higher value? It has original generator which is perhaps not a good as it could be or ???

No oil filter on a stock engine. You are correct about the oil screen. It's located on the bottom of the case held by a plate with 6 nuts.



As far as the lights go. I would continue to clean the wiring terminals. Use emery paper and contact cleaner. Then apply dielectric grease after cleaning to prevent corrosion.

You can also check the volts coming from the generator. It should be 7.4 to 8.1 volts at 2000 rpm (no load). If you're not getting a red generator on the spedometer, I wouldn't suspect the generator if the red light comes on at shut down.

The screen is the only "filter" but, an external filter can be added by drilling and tapping the case for the needed fittings. You can search the net for instructions on how to full flow the case. If you want to keep stock (purist) the screen is how it was engineered and created.

That's not something the backyard mechanic can do.

I guess it depends on how confident one is whether they can do it at home. There are videos on the net that show how it is done without taking the motor apart. I have done it manytimes without splitting the cases.

To answer the second question, while I have heard of people opening the breaker points in the regulator to increase voltage, I woudn't try it.

I found by doing a Google search for "adjusting bosch 6v regulator". It says it applys to all VW's 63 - 73.
