Panel identification please

Post by Digger89L »

Obtained this panel with some other miscellaneous body repair panels from another bug guy. He still has the "nose cone" for a 68 or newer beetle, but the other parts I got are good for 52 thru 79, so I am assuming this body panel (large front wheelhouse section??) is for something newer than 66-67 as it certainly doesn't match with my 66 bug. The other parts still have the Klokkerholm labels on them, so I was able to look them up on the Klokkerholm USA site ...however this one I can't even find an accurate visual reference for. (see photos) The key feature that tells me its later than 66-67 is the bracket for the bumper mount ....way different than my 66. If anyone can tell me definitively what this is, then I can see if I can get this panel to someone who can use it. Thanks!!

That panel shows the bumper mount in the trunk (and it's some sort of mount I've never seen before, possibly homemade?) All '68 and later cars have the bumper mount on the outside, not on the inside.

Well, no ..it's a "new" panel, with that bumper mount spot-welded on. Looks factory-made to me. Klokkerholm only shows the outer side of the panel on their website, so I got them to send me a pic of the inner side ....and it shows the "correct" mount for a pre-68 panel. The other anomalies with this panel are the hole for the wiring, and that little hole / clip dealy on the bottom edge ..a wire guide or something? I've checked images for post-68 panels, and it doesn't seem to match anything there either.

That mount may be "correct" for a pre '68, but it's not the factory style.

I'll have to wait until I tear my 66 down ...perhaps I can chisel the bumper mount off the old panel and weld it onto the new one (after I chisel this odd mount off). From just a visual inspection, the bolt holes do not appear to match the ones on the old panel ...for spacing, etc.

Get a spot weld removal bit to get the piece off cleaner
