Throw-out bearing??

My car will not go into gear with the car is running. I push the clutch in and she will just grind in any gear. With engine off, it freely goes into gear. I had heard that it could be a throw-out bearing. I am not sure about. Is there any maintenance check I can make or do that might fix problem or ...

She is alive!!!!

Okay, my kids were not all that excited so I am coming to a bunch of folks who truly appreciate Art-in-motion (well, art-sitting-still). After 22 years of sitting in two different garages and a couple of weeks of engine prep, she started last night and purrs as she did many years ago. My daughter co...

Okay, need a little more advice. Starter now turns over but car does not start. Using a tester, very little or no spark to plugs, pretty good spark at lead from bottom of coil to top of distributor. Is there a way to test if it is wire, dist. cap, rotor, or points? The plugs are brand new and I clea...

Good news, I tapped on solenoid and starter with a mallet, checked and cleaned all electrical, and it worked perfectly. The car did not start so I am now working through the electrical side. thanks,

John

Thanks John, after finding out where the starter and solenoid are located, I am going to eliminate all problems (fuses, switch, etc) before monkeying with it. If it is the solenoid, how straight forward is it to replace. Please keep in mind that I do not have a lift, just ramps and jack stands.

Solenoid Problem???

<t>I am new to this forum but am probably one of the more senior (in ownership years). Bought the her 32 years ago as my first car. It has been garaged and not started for 22 years. I spent the past week or two replacing gaskets, changing oil, cleaning filter, even flushed the gas tank. I tuned the ...

Adjusting valves

Hi, I just read advice on adjusting values everytime I change oil on my '66. I just posted a blurb about starting her after 20+ years sitting is a garage. Should I clean and adjust the valves before attempting to start?

Thanks, John

Has not started for 20+ years.

I still have my very first car, bought 31 years ago for $425. A Sea Sand Tan ’66. The car has been garaged for past 20 years or so and has not been started. I am looking for advice on what needs to be done before attempting to start. The engine turns over smoothly by hand (wrench) cranking. Here is ...

Story of my Beetle

Growing up, I remember my dad saying that he wished he had kept his first car. Well for that reason, I still do. My ’66 bug was my very first car, purchased 32 years ago for a whopping $425. It took care of me through high school and college. About 25 years ago I parked in the garage of my first hou...
